5 Reasons to Go SLS Free

It’s super easy to get caught up in all the buzzwords – parabens, mineral oils, sulphate free (or sulfate for our US Beauties) – and although many of us actively and successfully avoid them, what do they actually mean? And what’s so bad?

Whether you’ve recently big chopped or are a pro at handling your curls and kinks, the subject of sulphates or SLS’s is a popular one that we should definitely understand, because for us curly, kinky, coily girls especially, this one’s kind of a biggie.

So, if you’ve been looking for a reason to throw out your sulphate shampoos and repent for your sins, here are our top 5 reasons why you should consider switching to an SLS Free Shampoo:

1: Better moisture retention  Beauties. Look. This one ingredient is ruining your whole twist out, roller set, wash and go, everything! Sulphates don’t just remove product build up and dirt, they strip away your hairs natural oils and sebum, which increases dryness and breakage. Want more moisture, increased elasticity, better shine and less frizz? Start your routine off the right way with a better quality shampoo.

2: Strengthened hair follicles – Using SLS’s over a long period of time weakens your hair follicles, which can lead to brittle strands, shedding and hair loss. You didn’t come this far to have your #hairgoals crash and burn.

3: Reduced irritation  If you have any skin conditions such as dermatitis, rosacea or eczema, then your flare ups could be attributed to this one (nightmare) ingredient. Not only do you find sulphates in shampoos, but it’s in shower gels, hand wash, washing up liquid… You name it! They wreak absolute havoc on sensitive folk, so imagine what they’re doing to sensitive scalps and kinks and curls alike?

4: More vibrant colour  SLS’s (and their close friends) are aggressive. It’s no exaggeration, and you’ll see it the most if you have coloured hair. They slowly remove the pigment in the dye causing it to lose vibrancy pretty quickly. Then you get caught in a vicious cycle, because to perk up the colour, you dye more often, and the unnecessary stress begins to take it’s toll on your kinks and curls. Whilst trying to avoid sounding like one of those TV ads with a woman in the shower… For longer lasting colour, switch to SLS Free.

5: A happier body – The skin is the largest organ in our body, which sounds bizarre because lets be honest, when do we treat it like that? Whatever we put on our skin and scalp, goes right back in. These harsh chemicals eventually get transported to your liver, and are said to mimic oestrogen, which can lead to a hormone imbalance in some women longer term. So be better inside and out, and make the switch.
